Pakistani police have arrested more than 100 supporters of opposition leader Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party who entered Islamabad ahead of a planned protest in the capital, the interior minister says.

"About 450 people entered Islamabad today," Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday, adding, "Police intercepted them but most of them ran away, many leaving their cars behind. Police arrested more than 100 of them."

The minister said officers had confiscated seven Kalashnikov rifles, 21 rifle magazines, seven bulletproof jackets and tear gas canisters during the arrests.

Some 1,200 PTI activists, the Pakistani minister said, tried to drive in convoy to Islamabad from the northwestern city of Peshawar on Saturday night. When security forces stopped them on the motorway, they beat up officers but had to retreat when reinforcements arrived, he added.

The interior minister also stated that the PTI planned to occupy an office complex housing government ministries in Islamabad. "They want to occupy the Pakistan Secretariat and the plan is not to allow government employees to enter."

"The lockdown of the capital is not a crime against government, but a crime against the state. We are a nuclear power and what impression will it make before the world if a mob comes to the capital of the country to shut it down?"

Imran Khan has vehemently denied that his supporters possessed weapons.

Khan, a former Pakistan cricket star turned politician, has described the upcoming mass protest  on November 2 as a final push to force Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign over corruption allegations.

The PTI chief led a previous mass protest in the summer of 2014 in front of the parliament, calling for the government to resign over election rigging allegations.

Khan says anti-government protests would continue until the Sharif administration offers an appropriate response to the corruption allegations.

Leaked confidential documents from the Panamanian Mossack Fonseca law firm have shown how the company helped rich and powerful clients across the world with shady businesses. The clients reportedly include three of Sharif's children who carried out business transactions that could be judged as money laundering and tax avoidance.

The leaked records revealed that Sharif's children, Hasan, Hussain and Maryam, not only owned offshore companies, but also real estate property in London. Sharif's family denies any wrongdoing.

People in Pakistan, with Imran Khan at the helm, are asking for an inquiry to determine how Sharif’s children made all that money to buy the offshore companies and real estate in London's prime locations, and whether they had paid due tax on their income.

Kuantan: Favourites India prevailed 3-2 over arch-rivals Pakistan to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy, presenting a perfect Diwali gift to the nation at Kuanton on Sunday.

Goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute), Yousuf Affan (23rd) and Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) helped India surmount the challenge from Pakistan, who rallied from two goals behind through strikes by Muhammad Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shaan (38th) in the title clash of the fourth edition of tournament.

This was the first time the teams were meeting in the final of a continental tournament since India dethroned Pakistan as the Asian Games champions in Incheon, South Korea in 2014.

India had won the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating Pakistan in the final in 2011.

Pakistan reversed the result in the title contest the next year and went on to retain it in 2013 by defeating Japan in the final.

World No 6 India were the favourites going into the tournament, but were without several seasoned players who had been rested to recuperate from injuries.

India went into the title contest at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium without ace custodian PR Sreejesh, who was rested due to pulled hamstring and Akash Chikte took the position under the bar.

India earned their first penalty corner in the seventh minute, but failed to make it count. Ace flicker Rupinder was on the spot, but Jasjit Singh Kular was allowed to take the shot in a tactical move. Jasjit's shot went wide of the left and posed no threat.

Pakistan had a chance to take the lead in the 12th minute when Muhammad Rizwan Jr picked up a long ball inside the Indian circle and had only the goalkeeper to beat from close range. Goalkeeper Chikte stepped up to tackle him from close and Rizwan Jr shot wide to muff the opportunity.

A cross from the right sailed across the Pakistan goal in the 11th minute without the Indian strikers being able to connect, while at the other end Muhammad Arslan Qadir's shy from a narrow angle was padded away by the Indian goalkeeper as the first quarter came to an end.

India broke the deadlock to score the first goal in the 18th minute on their second penalty corner as Rupinder sent a rasping drag-flick into the left side of the net. This was the 11 penalty corner conversion in the tournament by Rupinder, the highest goal-scorer in the tournament by a big margin.

Three minutes later, Nikkin Thimmaiah relayed a ball from Sardar Singh to Talwinder Singh on the left. Talwinder could not control his reverse drive and the ball went soaring over the cross-bar.

Seasoned Indian midfielder Sardar Singh was again in the picture as India increased the lead in the 23rd minute as he worked up on the right flank and put Ramandeep Singh in possession on top of the circle.

Ramandeep's cross was deflected in by Yousuf Affan into the boards to put India 2-0 up.

Under pressure, Pakistan responded by forcing their first penalty corner, which was converted by Muhammad Aleem Bilal in the 26th minute. Bilal sounded the boards with a low drag-flick that beat the goalkeeper.

Pakistan defence had no trouble in warding away India's attempts to send long diagonal balls into the circle and capitalised on a lapse by the Indian defence to draw 2-2 parity in the 38th minute. Ali Shan wasted no time in slapping the ball that had got deflected to him inside the scoring zone.

India had a goal disallowed on review in the 40th minute when the video umpire ruled that Kothajit Singh's shot from outside the circle went into the goal without a touch.

India wrested the lead back in the 51st minute when Sardar again shaped the goal-bearing move by working his way up on the left flank and gave a through pass to Thimmaiah, who beat Pakistan custodian Fareed Ahmed with a diagonal flick that ended inside the right goal-post.

Pakistan forced their second penalty corner in the 53rd minute, but the opportunity went abegging as the push could not be stopped.

In the final two minutes of play, all Indian players fell back into their territory to keep the last-gasp Pakistan attacks at bay.

Pakistani police Sunday arrested more than 100 supporters of opposition politician Imran Khan who entered Islamabad days before a planned protest shutdown of the capital, the interior minister said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is under growing pressure from opposition parties, mainly Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), over his children's offshore bank accounts which were revealed in the Panama Papers leak.

Khan, a former cricketing hero, has threatened to "lock down" Islamabad on Wednesday to force Sharif to accept an inquiry into the affair.

The new protest plan comes at a sensitive time for Sharif, with the Supreme Court due to start hearing a case about the Panama Papers revelations on Tuesday.

"About 450 people entered Islamabad today," Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told a press conference.

"Police intercepted them but most of them ran away, many leaving their cars behind. Police arrested more than 100 of them."

Officers seized seven Kalashnikov rifles, 21 rifle magazines, tear gas and seven bulletproof jackets, the minister said.

He said Khan's PTI planned to occupy the Pakistan Secretariat, an office complex housing government ministries.

"They want to occupy the Pakistan Secretariat and the plan is not to allow government employees to enter," he said.

The minister said that on Saturday night some 1,200 PTI activists tried to drive in convoy to Islamabad from the northwestern city of Peshawar. When police stopped them on the motorway they beat up officers but had to retreat when reinforcements arrived.

"The lockdown of the capital is not a crime against government, but a crime against the state. We are a nuclear power and what impression will it make before the world if a mob comes to the capital of the country to shut it down?" the minister said.

Imran Khan denied his activists had possessed weapons.

Police have cordoned off his residence and fired tear gas during clashes there with his supporters on Sunday, an AFP photographer said.

In summer 2014 Khan led a mass protest that lasted four months. He allied himself with populist cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri to stage a sit-in outside parliament calling for the government to resign over vote-rigging allegations.

Khan called off the protest in December 2014 after Taliban militants stormed an army-run school in Peshawar and killed 154 people, most of them children.

Pakistan To Free On Bail National Geographic 'Afghan Girl'

Islamabad, Pakistan:  An Afghan woman immortalised on a National Geographic magazine cover is to be freed on bail days after being arrested in Pakistan for fraud, a government minister said on Sunday.

The haunting image of Sharbat Gula, taken in a Pakistan refugee camp by photographer Steve McCurry in the 1980s, became the most famous cover image in the magazine's history.

Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Gula on Wednesday for living in the country on fraudulent identity papers following a two-year investigation on her and her husband, who has absconded.

"I think I will have to review this case because she is a woman and we should see it from a humanitarian angle," Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told a press conference Sunday.

"But if we withdraw charges against her, deport her or give her a temporary visa to leave Pakistan, then we will have to take back cases against the officials who issued her fake ID card, they are real culprits and I do not want to let them off the hook in any manner," he said.

"As a first step the FIA should arrange her bail as soon as possible so that she should get of jail," Khan added.

India's hockey team gifted the country on Diwali its second Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament title after defeating arch foes Pakistan 3-2 in the final at the Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium in Kuantan on Sunday.

India's two second-half goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute) and Affan Yousuf (23rd) were cancelled out by Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shan (38th) but Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) scored the winner for the reigning Asian Games champions.

Amid the diplomatic feud between the two countries who are erstwhile hockey masters, the result of the match bore much more significance than the title.

And both the teams lived up to the expectations of the highly-anticipated clash. However, it was India who started the match brightly as Pakistan looked defensive at the beginning.

Twitter exploded in praise for the Indian hockey team who became the champions of Asia after scoring 30 goals in the tournament and without losing a single game. The nation who rejoiced a victory over arch rival Pakistan, hailed the victory as the 'perfect Diwali gift.' Here are some of the best reactions from the Twitter

Pakistan vs West Indies: Shannon Gabriel, Devendra Bishoo thwart Misbah-ul-Haq and co

Sharjah: Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel shared seven wickets between them to stop Pakistan from posting a big total on the opening day of the third and final Test in Sharjah on Sunday.

Pakistan were cruising along nicely at 230-4 when West Indies grabbed four quick wickets to put Pakistan on the back foot at 255-8 by close of play at the Sharjah stadium.

At close, tail-enders Mohammad Amir was batting on six and Yasir Shah on one as West Indies will look to bowl out Pakistan early on day two.

Pakistan, who won the toss on a batting-friendly pitch, saw opener Sami Aslam (72), Misbah-ul-Haq (53), Younis Khan (51) and Sarfraz Ahmed (51) all reach half centuries.

Ahmed and Misbah had added 80 for the fifth wicket but Pakistan lost four wickets in the space of 18 runs to slump to 248-8, with Bishoo registering figures of 4-74 and Gabriel 3-58.

"We are in a good position to get them out (under 300)," said Bishoo, who took a career best 8-49 in the first Test. "We must build on this good bowling performance by posting a good total and that will strengthen our position."

That slump could hurt Pakistan's chances of whitewashing West Indies 3-0 after winning the first Test by 56 runs in Dubai and the second by 133 runs in Abu Dhabi.

Misbah had started his record 49th Test as captain — bettering Imran Khan's feat of 48 Tests as captain — on a good note when he won the third straight toss and instantly decided to bat, but his batsmen played reckless shots.

Misbah was himself guilty as he gloved a reverse sweep off Bishoo after hitting three fours and a six.

Aggrieved
Misbah was lucky to survive a close leg-before decision after West Indian captain Jason Holder took a review against Australian umpire Paul Rieffel's not out decision, but television umpire Richard Illingworth backed up the on-field official on the basis of sound, which could have been an edge off the bat.

That left West Indian players aggrieved.

Aslam, who added 106 for the third wicket with Younis, also fell to an irresponsible reverse sweep off Bishoo after looking set for his maiden hundred, having hit seven fours and a six in his 172-ball knock.

Younis, who hit four boundaries and a six off Chase in completing his 31st Test half century, also played a rash shot and was caught off Roston Chase.

Ahmed, who hit five fours, was bowled by Gabriel while at the other end Bishoo had Wahab Riaz for four.

Earlier, it was Gabriel who jolted the Pakistan innings at the start with the wickets of Ali and Shafiq in the very first over of the match.

Ali, who scored a career-best 302 not out in the first Test, edged a lifting delivery from Gabriel to slip after Sami had taken a single off the first ball.

Asad Shafiq also survived just one delivery before being trapped lbw as that time Holder successfully challenged Reiffel's not out decision.

Pakistan brought back pacemen Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz — rested for the second Test — in place of Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali.

West Indies also made two changes from the Abu Dhabi Test, with fit-again wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich replacing Shai Hope and paceman Alzarri Joseph coming in for Miguel Cummins.

Nawaz Sharif pursuing Narendra Modi's interests in Pakistan: Imran Khan

$

ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan today accused Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of pursuing his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi's interests in Pakistan as the government cracked down on the cricketer-turned-politician's supporters with police arresting over 100 of them.

"When Nawaz Sharif went to London for whatever kind of surgery, he on the hospital bed first telephoned Modi instead of his mother or children," Imran told a press conference outside his Bani Gala residence here, referring to Sharif's open heart surgery at a London hospital in May.

"Nawaz is following Modi's 'interests' in Pakistan. Nawaz is behind the security leaks story which defamed the armed forces. Actually his and Modi's agenda is same," the Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf Chairman said.

Imran asserted that "everybody knows" that sacked Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid cannot leak sensitive information to the media on his own.

Sharif yesterday sacked Rashid over the recent "leaked" media report about a rift between the civilian and military leaderships on support to militancy.

"Rashid is a darbari (courtier) and he did what Nawaz told him to do so," Imran said.

"The whole state machinery is being used to save a corrupt Prime Minister. I will not accept a 'suspect' as Prime Minister of Pakistan. As long as I am alive I will not go after Nawaz Sharif's corruption," the 64-year-old leader said.

Imran stressed that there was no difference between Pervez Musharraf's dictatorship and Sharif's democracy. He asked under what law his party workers are being arrested and roads blocked.

"Our legal team will move the court tomorrow," Imran stated.

Police arrested over 100 Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf protesters trying to reach party chief Imran's residence. Police also baton-charged protesters in the Pakistan Chowk area.

Police used tear-gas and baton to stop the PTI activists from reaching Bani Gala residence of Imran. However, no PTI worker suffered serious injuries.

Meanwhile, Islamabad police said they recovered five Kalashnikov rifles, a pistol, six magazines, a bulletproof vest, alcohol and three tear gas shells from PTI leader Amin Gandapur's car outside Bani Gala.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Revenue Minister Amin Gandapur's car was stopped at a checkpost and searched. The car was impounded and Gandapur's driver was detained by police, Dawn News reported.

The Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf has announced locking down Islamabad on November 2 to pressure Sharif to resign in connection with probe into his off shore holdings revealed in Panama Papers.

The government has already blocked provincial roads to the capital and arrested around 1,000 Pakistan Tahreek-i-Insaf workers.

Clashes erupted between police and Pakistan Tehreek-i- Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad and some parts of Punjab province ahead of the party's November 2 planned lock down of the capital aiming to unseat Sharif.

Imran also said Sharif and his brother Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were using the whole state machinery to save a corrupt prime minister.

According to former Punjab governor and PTI leader Chaudhry Sarwar, so far Punjab and Islamabad police have arrested 1,000 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers.

He said police was not only arresting the PTI workers heading to Islamabad but also from their homes.

The Punjab government has started blocking all entry points leading to the federal capital. The government's decision was causing immense inconvenience to commuters.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said the government had closed roads near Attock to check the movement of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers into Punjab because they are planning to head towards Islamabad.

However, he said no other roads in the province had been blocked "completely" though snap-checking of all those heading towards the federal capital was being carried out.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesman Mushtaq Ghani said that the federal and Punjab governments had converted the province into a prison by placing barriers on roads.

He said Prime Minister Sharif could "punish" the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers but he had no right to create hardship for the people of the entire province.

The Peshawar-Islamabad motorway has also been closed at one point while barricades have also been placed at Mardan and Nowshera roads.

Heavy contingents of police have been deployed on various roads leading to Islamabad while transporters had been warned against facilitating the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf supporters.

CHINA’S Shanghai Electric Power will buy a controlling stake in K-Electric, a power generation and distribution company in Pakistan’s largest city, for US$1.77 billion, K-Electric’s parent firm said in a statement yesterday.

Dubai-based Abraaj Group said it had entered into a definitive agreement with Shanghai Electric to divest its 66.4 percent stake in K-Electric .

K-Electric serves around 2.2 million customers in and around Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city with a population of about 20 million. It is involved in both generation at thermal power plants and power distribution.

“Today marks a milestone in that partnership as we enter into a definitive agreement to divest our stake in a high performance business and market leader to a strategic buyer who is fully committed to continuing this success story into the future,” Arif Naqvi, Abraaj’s chief executive, said in a statement.

When completed, the deal will be the biggest M&A in Pakistan in a decade. Large parts of the Pakistani economy remain nationalized, or held by a few private businessmen, rather than diversified companies.

“The K-Electric transaction only marks the beginning of SEP’s cooperation with Abraaj and we look forward to further collaboration between the two parties in many other areas in the future,” Wang Yundan, Shanghai Electric Power’s CEO, said in a statement.

Shanghai Electric Power announced its intention to bid for the stake in August.

Chinese companies’ interest in Pakistan is growing after China announced energy and infrastructure projects worth US$46 billion in the South Asian nation last year.

KUANTAN: Pakistan were beaten by India 2-3 in a keenly contested final of the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy at the Kuantan hockey stadium in Malaysia on Sunday.

It was India's first title win after five years since a shootout win in 2011 over Pakistan.

For India, goals were scored by Rupinder Pal Singh, Affan Yousef and Nikin Thimmiah while Aleem Bilal and Ali Shan netted goals for Pakistan.

Leading the team was Rupinder Pal Singh who scored through a penalty corner in the 18th minute to give India the lead. Young Affan Yousef doubled that lead in the 23rd minute with a field goal but three minutes later Pakistan's Aleem Bilal pulled one back in the 26th.

Pakistan dominated the third quarter and the goal from Ali Shan in the 38th minute was proof of that but it was Nikin Thimmaiah's sensasional stickwork in the 51st minute that turned out to be the last goal of the game that would give India the trophy.

This was the first time the teams were meeting in the final of a continental tournament since India defeated Pakistan at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in 2014.

India had won the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating Pakistan in the final in 2011.

Pakistan reversed the result in the title contest the next year and went on to retain it in 2013 by defeating Japan in the final.

raghavendra-04

Sri Raghavendra Swamy was born in 1601 A.D. at Bhuvanagiri (Tamil Nadu), by the benign Grace of Lord Venkateswara, when all the planets were in exalted and auspicious houses, bestowing a long divine life, (700 years) full of miracles and healing powers for the welfare of humanity. He ruled the Vedic Samrajya from 1624 to 1671. His 345th Aradhana was celebrated in August, when lakhs of devotees thronged Manthralayam and the hundreds of Brindavans in India and abroad.

A famous couplet in Kannada goes like this: Manthralayadilluruva Karedallige Baruva.

The meaning is “Residing in Manthralaya, He will respond to your call.” This is absolutely true. Sri Parimalacharya has given darshan to many in India and abroad, particularly in the U.S., where many Kannada devotees reside.

Venkatacharya, as the saint was known, got married to Saraswathy and the two were leading a happy life, even though they were extremely poor. Also they had implicit faith in God. When Venkatacharya was crowned as Saint Raghavendraswamy, Saraswathy, unable to withstand the pangs of separation committed suicide. By His divine powers, Swami sent her to heaven.

While touring Kumbakonam, Sri Raghavendraswamy was invited to attend a function, with his wife and son. The head of the family requested him to make sandalwood paste, using a grinding slab. It was Swami’s practice to recite Vedic Mantras, mentally. The paste was given to all the guests, who smeared it on their bodies. And they complained of a burning sensation all over. The Swami, tendering his sincere apology, explained that he was inadvertently reciting Agni Stothram, while grinding. He again invoked Lord Varuna and made a paste, which had a cooling effect on every one.

A royal Prince was bitten by a cobra and died immediately. When Swami was told about this, he had the venom extracted by the same snake and the Prince recovered. A devotee, who met with an accident, also got another lease of life.

Raghunatha Rao arranged a special puja for Sri Raghavendraswamy in his house. Mango juice was prepared in a large vessel and kept in the kitchen. His only child fell into the vessel and drowned. Invoking Sri Moola Rama, the Swami sprinkled holy padhodhaka water on the child, bringing it back to life.

Original Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Raghavendra (Mula Brindavana)

Original Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Raghavendra (Mula Brindavana)

The miraculous healing powers of Sri Raghavendraswamy spread far and wide. Some unscrupulous and mischievous boys wanted to test the Swami. On his route, one of them lay down pretending to be dead fully covered by a white cloth. The understanding was that he should not get up when Swami sprinkled water and asked him to rise. He should get up when the command was given by them. The drama was enacted and wailing friends asked Swami to revive the boy. Swami simply said that his life span was over and hence nothing could be done. He was indeed dead and did not awaken when the mocking gang asked him to.

In Sirasangi, a gentle man with an intention to test his powers, gave him a wooden rod covered with steel caps at both ends, and asked him to make it grow into a plant. After meditation, Swami planted it in the soil and sprinkled holy water on it. The dead wood started sprouting. This miracle is incorporated in the Suprabhatam of Sri Raghavendraswamy, in Sanskrit.

Out of profound regard for Sri Raghavendraswamy, the Badshah of Bijapur, presented a rare gem-studded golden necklace. The Swami offered it to God and placed it in the Yaga Kundam. The Badshah was much annoyed and expressed his feeling. The Swami put his hand in the fire, retrieved the chain in the same condition and gave it back.

When Sri Guru Rayar was proceeding to Adoni, Venkanna, a cow-herd boy prostrated before him. The Swami blessed him and advised him to pray at the time of adversities. After a few days, the Nawab of Adoni, who was passing by, stopped and asked Venkanna to read a message from the neighbouring King. The illiterate boy expressed his inability to read. A furious Nawab threatened to kill him if he did not read. Venkanna earnestly prayed to Sri Raghavendraswamy to save him. Most surprisingly, he read the entire text. As there was very good news in the message, the king made him the Dewan of Adoni.

raghavendra-03

After learning about the miraculous powers of Swami, the Nawab decided to test him. He told his Dewan to take him to Guruji. He took meat on a silver plate covered with a silk cloth and offered it. After sprinkling water, Swami asked his disciples to remove the silk cloth revealing fruits. The Nawab fell at Swami’s feet soliciting his person. Also he requested the Swami to ask for any favour or gift. Guruji asked him to hand over Manchala village, which has come to be known as Manthralayam. It is at this holy place that Bhakta Prahlada performed a great yaga.

In 1671, Sri Raghavendra-swamy asked his followers to construct a Brindavan around him, at Manthralayam. He sat there playing on the veena and sang “Indhu Enege Sri Govindha” in Bhairavi invoking Lord Krishna to dance before him. He then controlled his breath and a Brindavan was constructed around him, placing 300 Vishnu Saligramas over his head. It is believed that he is alive inside the Brindavan, another 600 years, performing miracles. His very affectionate devotee, Appannacharya, was late in reaching Manthralaya, by which time the construction of the Brindavan was completed. A sorrow-stricken Appannacharya could not complete an important sloka. From inside, the Swami prompted him with the words, “Sakshi Hayatsothruhi.”

raghavendra-01

When Sir Thomas Munroe was the Collector of Bellary in 1800, the Madras Government ordered him to procure the entire income from the Math and Manthralaya village. When the Revenue officials were unable to comply with this order, Sir Thomas Munroe visited the Math for investigation. He removed his hat and shoes and entered the sacred precincts. Sri Raghavendraswamy emerged from the Brindavan and conversed with him for sometime, about the resumption of endowment. The Saint was visible and audible only to Munroe who received Manthraksha. The Collector went back and wrote an order in favour of the Math and the village. This notification was published in the Madras Government Gazette in Chapter XI and page 213, with the caption “Manchali Adoni Taluka”. This order is still preserved in Fort St. George and Manthralayam.

gazette-01

All the priests in the Math were much annoyed, because in spite of their long and sincere service, he did not give them darshan. That night, Guruji appeared in the dream of the chief priest and told him that as Prahaladha, he and Munroe were class-mates in Kritha Yuga and he was destined to perform this noble deed of solving the Math’s problem. Hence the unique privilege.

An ardent devotee, who suffered a massive heart attack, and was given up for dead is said to have been revived by Swami who blessed him in person. In another instance, a sceptic person, who questioned the significance of Thursday fasting, was made to realise its importance and he is now a steadfast devotee. Swami appeared before his devotee who had just completed the Sri Satyanarayana Puja and gave her manthrakshe.

A famous film distributor in Chitradurga, had this experience. One morning, all his family members were away, except their servant, a Muslim, who was mopping the floor. Sri Raghavendraswamy stood before him and said in Kannada, “Dhari bidu”, meaning “make way”. He went towards the Puja room, which was locked, and it opened on its own. He had sprinkled water from the front door up to the Puja room, while entering. When the servant went inside, he could not see the “stranger” and was shocked to find the Puja room open. When the family members returned, he narrated the incident about the “stranger”. When they showed him a picture of Sri Raghavendraswamy, he said that it was that very person who came there. Incidentally, the distributor had helped generously in the construction of Brindavans all over the country and Swami had sanctified his house, with holy water.

A devotee in Bangalore had the unique experience of Swami receiving him at the Math. The devotee reached the Math at 1 p.m. and the doors were locked. Crestfallen he was about to retreat when an old priest asked him to come inside. The devotee had darshan and received the prasadam. It was only after he came out did he learn that he had just been involved in a miracle because a person he met outside said that he had the keys to the locked door and it was none other than Swami who had blessed him. And in several cases Swami has blessed childless couples with progeny. B.K.S. Varma, the famous artist of Karnataka, painted a picture of Sri Raghavendraswamy, in a sitting posture and writing on palm leaves. The painting was almost complete, except for the eyes. As it was very late in the night, he was much tired and fell asleep by the side of the photograph.

Sri Raghavendraswamy appeared in his dream and told him that he himself would complete the picture by painting the eyes. When the artist woke up in the morning, the eyes were in place looking radiant. Copies of the precious picture were printed at Bangalore and were all quickly sold. One of them is at the Rayar Math in Saligramam, Chennai.

This writer himself has benefited from the kindness of Swami. A ring which had the embossed figure of Swami was lost and an intensive search did not bring it to surface. The ring was later found among the valuables in the steel locker, where certainly the writer did not put it.

The life span of Sri Raghavendraswamy is 700 years, of which 400 years have been completed and more than 300 Brindavans installed in India and abroad. Guruji transcends caste and religion. All are equal to him. K. J. Yesudas gave a music performance at Manthralaya, recently, singing songs on Him, paying homage to Swami to whom we shall pray for world peace.

raghavendra-02

Well, all of us know about the episode of Thomas Munroe and Raghavendra Swamy. However, not many know that Rarayu himself gave the reason for appearing before Munroe and talking to him. This is the story of Munroe and Rayaru.

When Munroe visited Mantralaya, he was the Collector of Bellary. He had been offered the post after the final Anglo-Mysore war of 1799 in which Tipu Sultan had been killed.

The British had parceled out the territories of Tipu among their allies and also allowed the Wodeyars to retain lands in south Karnataka.

The British had decided to keep the territory surrounding Bellary. There were two reasons for this. The last Vijayanagar Emperor had been pensioned off and his territory taken over by the British. The second reason was that Bellary and surrounding areas had been the stronghold of Tipu and the British did not want any further resistance.

Munroe had ordered the revenue officials to rationalise their system of collection. As temples were centres of revenue, he wanted the revenue officials to exercise greater control over them (This is what the Governments in India do now. They decide to take over a temple or religious institution under the Muzrai Act whenever they wanted to exercise greater control over them).

The then Government of Madras asked Munroe to ensure that all the revenue from the Raghavendra Swamy Temple in Mantralaya were remitted directly to the Treasury.

Munroe passed on this order to the revenue authorities who failed to act. When there was reminder from Madras about the revenue pending from Mantralaya, Munroe decided to take matters in his own hand and decided to visit Mantralaya.

raghavendra-01

It was sometime in 1800 when Munroe came to Mantralaya, When he was told about the holiness of the place, he respectfully removed his shoes and also his hat and entered the matha.

He then walked towards the Brindavana of Raghavendra Swamy and began looking at it. Even as he was watching the Brindavana, he slowly began seeing a figure seated in the Brindavana.

The figure emerged more clearly to show itself as a saint and Munroe soon began his famous conversation in English.

The officials accompanying Munroe and the temple priests looked askance as they saw that Munroe was speaking with himself. They could not see Rayaru. They were also surprised to see Munroe clutching Mantrakshathe in his hands.

Munroe went back without collecting the revenue and wrote an order against collecting revenue from the math and sent it back to Madras Presidency.

This notification, deciding not to collect revenue from Mantralaya, was published in the Madras Gazette, Chapter XI and page 213, under the heading “Manchali Adoni Taluka.”

I have seen this order in Fort St. George. A copy of this order is also in the possession of the matha in Manthralaya.

Let me go back to the story of Munroe and our Rayaru. Soon, the news of Munroe having spoken to Raghavendra Swamy spread far and wide. There were celebrations in Mantralaya over the issue.

However many devotes, matha officials and even the priests of the temple were disappointed that Rayaru chose to appear and speak before a Britisher while they were denied any such privilege. “What is so great about Munroe that Rayaru gave him darshana,” they asked.

The Pradhana Archaka of the Raghavendra Swamy Temple and others were discussing the eposode regularly and voicing their disappointment that they had so far not been given any such darshan.

One night, Rayaru appeared in the dreams of the Pradhana Archaka, who was also a party to the discussion, and told him that there was a specific reason for physically coming before Munroe.

Rayaru disclosed that when he was on earth as Prahalada in Krita Yuga, one of his classmates was Munroe. Rayaru durng his previous avatars was Prahalada, Balika Raja (He was killed in a mace fight in the Kurukshetra war by Bheema. He had to fight against the Pandavas as he ws asked to do so by Bheesma, his kin) and Vyasa Raja.

raghavendra-05

He also told the Pradhana Archaka, that Munroe had been assigned a task to be completed and he could do that only in his later avatar as a British official. Munroe, Rayaru, said had repaid the debt by waiving off the revenue. He had, therefore, the unique privilege of seeing Rayaru and conversing with him.

By the way, there is a statue of Munroe in Chennai. The statue shows him seated on a horse without a saddle. The statue was made by Francis Legatt Chantrey, the famed English sculptor. There is another reason to remember Munroe. He set up a committee in 1826 to look into the issue of public instruction in Madras region. One of the recommendations of the committee was to set up Presidency College in Madras.

PUNE: Storage and information management firm Iron Mountain plans to invest $40-50 million in India over the next few years as it looks to strengthen its presence in the country. Hitesh Gupta, managing director, Iron Mountain India said that these investments would happen over the next three-five years.

“The India business has made significant progress in the last three years. We currently have about 2600 customers in 14 locations, about 90% of who are from the banking and financial services industries,” said Gupta, who took over as MD a few months ago. In the last two years, the company acquired three firms in India which helped increase its customer base.

“We have grown at 25% CAGR in the last four years and expect to grow at around 20% CAGR for the next few years,” said Gupta. He added that the company was also exploring acquisitions to gain strength in the banking and financial services space that could help its existing customers grow.

Going ahead, it plans to focus on the government segment, a space Gupta believes only 20% of the potential has been tapped, as well as healthcare.

Sri Raghavendra is considered to be magnanimous and benevolent; countless devotees of his testify to the miracles he has performed. The sacred sand of the Moola Brindavana (Moola Mrithika) has very special significance, to cure diseases and throw away evil forces. Some well known miracles are listed below.

Miracle for the Chola King

During the life of Raghavendra Theertha , Chola Mandala (kindom) experienced political unrest. Internecine wars started and the king experienced hard times. The Kingdom experienced plunder and accession and a terrible famine followed. The king spent his money from his own coffers. But the famine did not abate. He approached Raghavendra Teeratha and prayed for his kind indulgence in the welfare of his subjects. The Swamiji readily consented and stayed at Tanjore for 12 years and came to the succur of the people and the king. The Swamiji with his miraculous powers was able to save the people. The king who was all grateful offered a jewelled nacklace to Swamiji and the same was put by Swamiji in the Fire of Sacrifice as the Swamiji was a great Viraghi person of great renunciation. The king felt insulted when he saw his presentation thrown into fire. The Swamiji knew his (King’s) disturbances in mind and prayed to Parasu Rama, the in-dweller of Fire God, and showed his amazing powers by getting it back. The king realized that Raghavendra Swamy was not an ordinary ascetic but the one who possessed divine powers.

Mud Becomes More Precious Than Gold

Sri Raghavendra had a devoted disciple who was studying the shAstras under his tutelage. The education was over and time had come for the disciple to return home and marry. As the head of the maTha, Raghavendra was expected to bless this disciple and give him some money so that he could start life as a householder. In this case, it was even more imperative since the disciple came from a very poor family. However, he chose to bid farewell when Raghavendra was on the way to the river for his bath and did not have anything to give him. When Raghavendra expressed this, the disciple immediately replied “Even a handful of mud from you is even more precious than a gold full of gold”. Raghavendra was pleased with his devotion and accordingly scooped up a handful of mud from the ground and gave it to the disciple. The disciple received this with total reverence and tied it into a bundle. He then placed the bundle on his head and started back home.

raghavendra-03

He traveled till night and reached a village, and decided to halt there that the night. He approached the chieftain and requested him to grant him a place to sleep for the night. The chieftain said “You may sleep on the jugali of my house (a space just outside) but I have a problem. My wife is pregnant and is likely to deliver tonight. We have had extremely bad luck in the past because all our children have died immediately after birth. I am hoping that it is different this time”. The disciple agreed and slept immediately outside the main entrance to the house with his precious bundle as a pillow. At night, a dark and ferocious ghoul approached the house. This was the one that was killing all the children immediately after birth. This time, it had to cross the disciple to enter the house, but could not do so since the bundle under his head appeared like a wall of fire to it. It tried several times in vain and finally woke up the disciple. It told him “Your bundle contains a divine fire that is impossible for me to transgress. Why don’t you throw the bundle away? I will give you heaps of money, gold and precious jewels. The disciple pretended to agree, but quickly withdrew some consecrated mud from the bundle, and threw it on the ghoul. The effect of this action was spectacular. The ghoul screamed loudly and was immediately burnt to ashes. The noise woke up everybody in the house and they came outside the house. The disciple explained everything to them; at the same time the midwife came out of the house with the good news that the chieftain’s wife had delivered a healthy boy! The chieftain was ecstatic and hugged the disciple with joy. He attributed his good fortune to the advent of the disciple and thanked him profusely. The next day, he requested the disciple to stay back in the village and even offered his sister’s hand in marriage, along with a lot of wealth. The disciple gladly accepted this generous offer and lived happily. Thus, a handful of mud from Raghavendra brought the disciple wealth, a good wife, powerful connections and life-long happiness!

Dry Wood Sprouts Leaves

Once when Raghavendra was travelling, he passed through a village where an atheist headman was harassing all brahmins. This atheist did not believe in god, mantras or Vedas. Raghavendra decided to bring him on the right track, and so stayed in the local temple and announced a grand pUja. The headman immediately challenged him to a confrontation and asked him to prove the efficacy of the vEda mantras. He produced a vanake (a dry and hard piece of dead wood, used to pound grain in a pestle) and asked Raghavendra to make it sprout leaves. The brahmins present there protested saying that this was impossible and against the laws of nature. Raghavendra calmed them down saying that mUla rama knows how to protect the laws of nature, and how to overcome them when the occasion demands. He chanted vEda mantras and sprinkled water from his kamanDala on the vanake. Within a short time, the vanake sprouted fresh green leaves, vindicating Raghavendra’s words. The headman saw the error of his ways and surrendered at Raghavendra’s feet

Sri Vadeendra Theertharu

Sri Raghavendra Swamy desired a Brindavanam to be made for him, and Diwan Venkanna got one made. But the Swamiji ordered it to be reserved for a future pontiff that would come to the pontificate. He asked Diwan Venkanna to use the stone at Madhwaram fields for making a Brindavanam to him as the stone had been hallowed by a touch of Sri Ramachandra who had sat on it searching Sri Sitamata, This we see even to day as Moola Brindavanam at Mantralaya. Adjacent to the Moola Brindavan we see another Brindavan the Brindavanam of Sri Vadeentheertharu, a great grand son of Sri Raghavendra, fifth descendant after Sri Raghavendra in the Pontificate. He belongs to 18th Century. He was a great scholar and was as ardent devotee of his great grand father Sri Raghavendra, His ‘Gurugunasthavana’ of 36 verses composed in Sanskrit is a master piece composition and he sand it near the Brindavan. The whole Moola Brindavan nodded in appreciation of the scholastic work. Sri Raghavendra had been immensely pleased. Sri Raghavendra has given a special place of recognition to Sri Vadeendraru, by keeping him by his side. Devotees worship Sri Vadeendraru also as they offer Pradakshina (going in circles) simultaneously. when they go to round the Moola Brindavana, Sri Vijayadasaru great devotee of Dasapantha opines that Sri Vadeendra Theertharu as the incarnation of Devaguru Sri Brihaspathi Acharya and Sri Vadeendrat heertharu functions are as the minister, almost a P.A. to the Swamiji in the Brindavana. Blessed is Sri Vadeendraru. He was just a boy of about 2 years when Sri Raghavendra entered Brindavana. But Sri Raghavendra knew his capabilities and earmarked a special position of favor to him in the years to come.

Sri Vijaya Dasaru

Sri Vijaya Dasaru is another great devotee of Sri Hari, who appeared in our religious history much later. Born in poverty, bread in poverty, he was personified Poverty begging every meal. But he was sage “Bhrigumaharshi” incarnated now (Bhrigu Maharshi had established the supremacy of Lord Vishnu when he was commissioned by an assembly of rishis to report who was the greatest God of Gods.) One of the pontiffs in the lineage of descendants of Sri Raghavendra, Sri Vasudhendra Theertharu was Vijaya dasas’s contemporary. Dasa movement which had declined was revived by Vijaya by Vijaya dasa. He was inspired by Sri Raghavendra Swamiji to effect the revival and the Moola Brindavan at Mantralaya was his source of inspiration. He eulogized Sri Raghavendra as a great Bhagavatottama and sung the glory of Sri Raghavendra by a intuition which is being experienced now. Vijaya dasa disclosed the extraordinary Powers of Moola Brindavana and the greatness of Sri Raghavendra ever present there in.

Sri Jagannatha Dasaru

Jagannatha Dasaru, is another celebrated Hari Dasaru who has spread the name and fame of Sri Raghavendra, in 18th Century. Jagnnatha Dasaru went by the name Srinivasacharya, a profound scholar, but a vain Pandit. He offended Vijayadasa only to be blessed by him to get a further lease on his longevity. His life had come to an end and Vijaya dasa caused him a transfer of 40 years of life from the life of his disciple Gopal dasa. Sri Hari Kathamrutasara is a magnum opus, and encyclopedia of the doctrine of Sri Madhwa, all in vernacular-Kannada the common man’s understandable language. It is said that he was no other than the younger brother of prince Prahaladha, who could talk to Sri Raghavendra in his Brindavana. He has sung the glory of Sri Raghavendra and His Grace to the multitudes.

raghavendra-01

Sir Thomas Munroe

The English had come to trade in Bharath (India) , and they held a sway through their East India Company. Sir Thomas Munroe was one of their officers, who was asked to resume Mantralaya an endowment village granted to maintain the Mutt and temple at Mantralaya. He came on his duty to resume. He was a noble soul. Sri Raghavendra emerged from the Brindavan and convinced him about the irrevocability of the endowment and disappeared into the Brindavan giving him ‘Mantrakshate’ Sri Raghavendra was visible to Mr. Munore only and not to others. This episode is recorded in the Madras Gazettier in the First quarter of 19th Century, copy of which can be pursued even to day in the records at the Collectorate at Anantapur. Such is the greatness of Sri Raghavendra Thirtha Swamiji and words fail to describe his greatness. A follower of another religion had the good fortune of being blessed by Sri Raghavendra. An extract from the Gazette is listed below.

KKR, CPPIB eyes $4 billion Bharti Infratel stake buy, may emerge as largest shareholder

$
0
0
MUMBAI: Private equity heavyweight KKR and pension giant Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) are in talks with Sunil Mittal led Bharti Airtel to acquire a significant stake in its listed tower arm Bharti Infratel, said four sources in the know.

Last week in a stock exchange notification Bharti Airtel said it has taken board approval to explore monetization of a significant stake in Infratel. It however did not provide much colour in terms in the quantum of stake that it plans to divest or the value. Airtel currently owns 71.96% in the company while the rest is held by public shareholders.

The exercise is an attempt to give Bharti, India’s largest telecom operator, more financial headroom to combat deep pocket rivals like Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio Infocomm, due for commercial next year, and Vodafone.

Sources in the know said, Airtel is looking to divest up to 40% stake to a consortium of financial investors making them the single largest shareholder block. Depending on the valuation and the premium offered by the investors, it may also give up management control. Considering the size and scale of the potential transaction, KKR and CPPIB are looking to team up. A consortium approach may also help them avoid the open offer trigger.

With the current market capitalization of Bharti Infratel being Rs 65,814 crore ($10 billion approximately), the Infratel stake sale expected at around $4 billion based on current market value, is poised to become the largest telecom tower transaction in the country till date.

Bharti Infratel also owns 42% in Indus Towers – India’s largest telecom tower’s company that is a joint venture between Bharti, Vodafone, Idea Cellular. Together with its share in Indus, the company has 90,000 towers across 22 telecom circles nationwide. Its standalone market share of installed tower bases was 9.8% in FY15 but together with Indus, it makes the dominant player with a 40.8% share.

On each of its towers, over two slots are leased making the company's sharing factor 2.2 times. Bharti Infratel's average monthly rental per slot leased is also on the higher end of the industry at Rs 34,000.

In the last quarter ending in September the company reported revenue of Rs 3,292 crore and profit after tax of Rs 774 crore. It enjoys an EBIT margin of 27% and has an annualized EBIDTA of Rs 5,800. Between Indus Tower and Bharti Infratel the companies hold 40.8%. The ATC, Viom combine holds 14.8% market share. Reliance Infratel holds 11.6%.

KKR declined to comment. Mails sent to CPPIB on Saturday did not get a response till the time of going to press on Sunday. A Bharti Airtel spokesperson too said he had nothing to add at this moment beyond the last company statement on the matter.

“The board of directors at its meeting held on October 25 has authorized a committee of directors to evaluate options for monetization of a significant stake in Infratel…The final outcome of this exercise will be placed before the board for approval, before any final decision is taken. There is no certainty of a transaction until such time the board reviews and approves the proposal,” Bharti Airtel informed the stock exchanges last Wednesday.

Telecom analysts at HSBC there is a very good possibility of Bharti bringing down its stake in Infratel from the present 71% to 51% and de-leverage its balance sheet and this could bring down its net FY18e net debt /EBITDA to 1.7x from 2x (and if it were to add the recent auction related debt then net debt/EBITDA would come down from 2.1 x from 2.5x).

“In our view it is a matter time for Bharti’s shareholding in Bharti Infratel to come down to 51% and the aforesaid announcement by the company only accelerates the process. We believe funds raised may allow Bharti to reduce debt and fund capex for the next fiscal year. The one other inference could be Bharti benefiting from sector consolidation by attempting to consolidate its data spectrum holdings as GSM new entrants struggle with pure voice offerings,” wrote Rajiv Sharma and Darpan Thakkar in their report on Airtel dated October 26th. According to them, as per discounted cash flow (DCF) methodology, fair value of the shares is Rs 325/apiece.

On Friday, the Infratel stock closed at Rs 347/share, down 2.38%. However, two people familiar with the ongoing negotiations said a change of control could lead to a minimum of 10-15% premium of current price levels

KKR along with Temasek was part of a clutch of investors who had put in $1.25 billion in Bharti Infratel through a mix of equity and convertible debentures in December 2007. Of that, KKR alone had pumped in $250 million. It fully exited the company in 2015. Infratel was its maiden exit in India, giving it an estimated 70% return in rupee terms over a 7 year period. CPPIB is also one of the leading LPs of KKR globally and have in recent years emerged as a large infrastructure investor in India.

Most telecom companies are opting for an asset light model and looking at divesting their infrastructure arms. World over, telecom towers and other infrastructure are owned and maintained by independent tower companies like American Towers or Crown Castle. “Owning towers mean heavy investments and rising debt. This bloats the balance sheet with leverage and especially when EBITDA margins are under pressure as they are in India for most telcos, the problem gets more acute,” said a Mumbai based telecom consultant involved in the process.

Both Vodafone and Idea are looking to unlock value in their tower portfolios. Idea has 9,772 towers while Vodafone has around 12,000 towers. Both the companies have carved out the towers into self sufficient subsidiaries. Earlier this month, Reliance Infratel in a press statement said Canadian asset manager Brookfield may buy 51% in the company for Rs 11,000 crore.

Earlier this year, America Tower Corporation bought Viom Networks at an enterprise value of Rs 21,000 crore for 42,000 towers at a sharing factor of 1.9 times.

Bharti Airtel has a net debt of Rs 81,480 crore with revenue of Rs 24,652 crore and net income of Rs 1,461 crore in the quarter ended September 30. It is the first company to report profit in its India operations but was dragged by investments in Africa. With other operators including Idea Cellular looking at capital expenditure of around Rs 8,000 crore the investments ahead of Bharti Airtel are big. The company has so far invested around Rs 140,000 crore in spectrum, in the quarter ended September 30 Airtel spent Rs 5,288 crore capital expenditure on network expansion. Bharti too has been divesting parts of its African operations and has been looking to exit sub scale businesses in the Indian sub continent.

Competitor Vodafone India recently halved its debt as its UK-based parent converted Rs 47,700 crore worth of loans it had made to its Indian arm into shares. Idea Cellular’s balance sheet was also strengthened when its parent Aditya Birla Nuvo was merged with Grasim, giving access of the cement company’s cash to Idea Cellular.

Industry experts have said that the valuation of telecom towers is dependent on two factors, the first is the tenancy, or how many slots are leased on each tower, the second is the master level agreement between the operator and the tower company. James Taiclet, chief of American Tower has said the agreements signed in India don't have the same standards as global equivalents, lowering the premium on their sale.

However, the telecom tower companies have lately found many suitors as the Indian operators expand their 4G services. The demand for tower slots is expected to shoot up as incumbent operators compete with Reliance Jio.

Mumbai: The overseas borrowing window for Indian companies is narrowing as rising US treasuries and Libor make debt from abroad expensive and domestic interest rates are on their way down, bankers said. US rates have risen in line with expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike sooner rather than later, while local borrowing costs have come down due to rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

“Cost of borrowing for Indian companies borrowing from abroad is definitely going up, though there are enough funds out there for companies with decent ratings,” said Ananth Narayan, head, financial markets, Asean and South Asia, Standard Chartered Bank. “It is now much cheaper for companies to borrow locally.”

Ten-year US treasury yields have risen to 1.85%, the highest since May and a jump from 1.35% in July as strong economic growth numbers make an interest rate increase inevitable.

The benchmark London interbank offer rate (Libor) has also risen, with the six-month rate at 1.26%, the highest since June 2009.

“About a year ago, even post hedging, the rates were competitive. For example SBI raised some tier I capital at 8.75% from the domestic market a few days ago. It has also raised some tier I dollar funds at 5.5% which post hedging comes to around 11%,” said Jayesh Mehta, treasurer at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch. “A year ago, both these bonds would have been approximately between 9% to 9.50%, that gap has now widened.”

Indian companies have borrowed about $7.6 billion from overseas until September, on track to beat the $8.2 billion borrowed in 2015, mainly due to record low borrowing costs in the last two years, Bloomberg data show.

However, borrowing from abroad also involves hedging costs. On the other hand, local policy rate cuts seem to be getting transmitted with the highest rated companies paying 7.44% for fiveyear money, the lowest since April 2009 and down from the 11% peak in mid-2013, according to Bloomberg data.

“Because domestic rates have come down, the gap between overseas and domestic rates are wider,” Narayan said. “But decent companies will continue to see appetite for their paper abroad because the Indian macro story is still intact.”
